Rhino Poaching Figures Slightly Down

It was reported this week that the number of poached rhinos in South Africa decreased by 13 animals to 529 between January and June compared with the same period last year. It is a downward trend that was welcomed with cautious optimism by the government on Monday.

The number of rhinos poached for their horns in South Africa fell by 10 percent in 2016 to 1,054, the second straight year of decline according to government data released last month, but conservationists said the levels remain alarming.
